Seattle Mariners' starter Felix Hernandez continued his torrid start with a great performance against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. He went eight innings of five-hit shutout ball, striking out six and only walking two. In his two starts, Hernandez has made his mark early in the first time through the order. In the first three innings, he has limited hitters to 1-10 and hasn’t allowed hits in the first 30 pitches of any of his starts. His strikeout numbers are down, which raises questions about his breaking stuff, but I think it signals more of his maturity to work through a game.

The Colorado Rockies have been dismal on offense in the first week. They are last in the league with 10 runs and a .213 average in six games against the St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks, who swept Colorado in Colorado this weekend. The young cornerstones in Troy Tulowitski (.192) and Matt Holliday (.182) each have more strikeouts than hits. Three times this year, the Rockies have lost by at least five runs in a very slow start for the defending National League Champion Rockies.

Pittsburgh Pirates’ outfielder Xavier Nady has continued his success against the Atlanta Braves into a weekend series with the Florida Marlins. The right-handed Nady is hitting .385 with three home runs and nine RBI's for the 3-3 Pirates. In the first time he sees a pitcher in a game, he is 6-14 with five runs, two home runs, and five RBI's. Nady has been aggressive in the first week, and as the numbers start to level out, he will have to have patience to be a presence in the five hole.
