 Game Recap #10. Angels 5, Baltimore 6
Scot Shields gave up a walk off homerun to Orioles catcher, Ramon Hernandez, in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving the Angels their 5th loss of the season.
The Angels started their ten game road trip in Baltimore on Saturday. Ervin Santana was on the mound for the Angels and took a four run lead into the bottom of the 2nd inning where he would give up a solo homerun to Jay Gibbons.
The score is now 4-1. The Orioles didn’t score until an inning later when David Newhan went yard. The score is now 4-2, with the Angels lead getting smaller. Santana was still on the mound for the 5th inning when the Orioles would strike again. Nick Markakis hit a 2-run homer, tying the game up at four a piece.
J.C. Romero replaced Ervin Santana for the 8th inning where he allowed a single by Brian Roberts. Scot Shields then replaced Romero. Jeff Mathis allowed a pass ball, putting Roberts now in scoring position. Shields would get Matos to fly out to right but wasn’t so lucky when he allowed a single by Melvin Mora, scoring Roberts from second base.
With the Angels trailing Baltimore by one run in the top of the 9th inning, Latroy Hawkins was brought in to close out the game. Hawkins would then strike out Tim Salmon and Casey Kotchman. One out remaining, rookie Jeff Mathis was the Angels last hope.
Mathis took advantage of the opportunity and took Hawkins deep over the left field fence, tying up the game at five apiece. It was Mathis’ first career homerun, and what great timing it was. In Mathis’ previous at-bats he was 0 for 3 with a strikeout.
Scot Shields took the mound for the bottom of the 9th inning and gave up a walk off homerun to Ramon Hernandez. This loss drops the Angels back down to .500.
Player of the game: Jeff Mathis – 1 for 4, 1 HR and RBI.
Disappointment – Vladimir Guerrero – Vlad went 0 for 4 with a strikeout. However, he’s still hitting .417.
