 Baltimore – Coming off a 14-day road trip, the Orioles felt good to be home last night in Camden yards. More than 23,000 fans were on hand to witness rookie pitcher Hayden Penn’s first major league win. The Orioles lost all three of Penn’s previous starts including last week’s lost against the Pittsburgh Pirates where Baltimore squandered a five-run lead.
The Astros took the lead 2-0 in the top of the second inning after Jason Lane’s two-run homer. But the Orioles answered back with a two-run homer from Jay Gibbons followed by another home run from Larry Bigbie. This was Bigbie’s first home run since September 30, 2004. It was also his first pitch after coming off the disabled list where he had been since May 26 with a hamstring injury.
Three more runs by the Orioles would push them ahead 6-2.
Hayden Penn had a little trouble during the sixth inning after walking Lance Berkman and a two-run homer from Morgan Ensberg, which brought the Astros within three runs. Todd Williams relieved Penn with two outs to in the sixth. Adam Everett drove in Lamb bringing the score 7-5, Orioles.
Cue Larry Bigbie to add a run and BJ Ryan pitching a scoreless ninth inning and you get an Orioles win.
The Baltimore Orioles (37-26) remain in first place in the AL East still three games in front of the Boston Red Sox.
The Orioles meet the Astros again tonight at Camden yards 7:05 p.m. |
