2008 Season Preview: Chicago White Sox
When a big market team that won the World Series just two seasons ago loses 90 games (and really should have lost more), you expect to see the scaffolding of a major reconstruction project surrounding the ballclub.
Recent World Series Champs Struggling To Keep Pace
A year is a long time in baseball. Just ask Kenny Williams and Walt Jocketty.
White Sox Loosen Reins In Well-Populated AL Races
The Yankees asserted themselves over the weekend at the expense of the Chicago White Sox. With 10 AL clubs in the hunt to win their Division or the Wild Card, the races will go down to the wire and there is no lock that last year's champion will be there.
Partying Like It’s 1959!
A team built on pitching, pitching, and a little bit more pitching. Evidence of this can be summed up with the performances from their starters from games 2 through 5. That is a complete game from four different starting pitchers in consecutive games. Mark Buerhle, Jon Garland, Freddy Garcia, and Jose Contreras were able to do something that hadn’t been done by a group of starters since the 1928 New York Yankees.
A Call For The Ages
In Game 2 of the ALCS, Steve Bartman came in the form of home plate umpire Doug Eddings for the Anaheim Angels. Due to the magnitude of the situation, this will go down as one of the most controversial, if not worst calls in the history of playoff baseball.
White Sox Float On
Prior to 2004, both of the Sox’, the Red ones from Boston and the White ones from Chicago, were going through the same very long streak: not winning the World Series. Decades upon decades had passed and neither team had been able to capture the title.
Falling At The Speed Of Light
There are only 15 games left this season. If Chicago could even go 8-7, which doesn’t seem like that much, they would most likely make the playoffs. That would put them at 97-65. What that means is that Cleveland would have to go 13-2 in their last 15 games to win the division.
Buehrle And Garland: A Dynamic Duo
It’s become increasingly rare to find a starting rotation in baseball that has two dominant starting pitchers. That is why the Chicago White Sox’s Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland are somewhat of a revelation of sorts. Two guys on the same team that are right in the middle of the AL Cy Young race.
Playoff Predicament
The White Sox had a 15 game lead a month ago in the AL Central and now its dwindled to a mere 7 1/2 over the Cleveland Indians with six games to play against the Tribe.
Awful August
The Chicago White Sox have gone 7-11 in August and lost seven straight games until Sunday’s 6-2 win over the New York Yankees. Don’t look now, but that colossal lead in the AL Central has been trimmed to eight games by the streaking Cleveland Indians, who have won five in a row.
Is Pods A Replacement A Junior?
The best possible substitute for Frank Thomas would be a guy who is hitting around .286 with 27 homers and about 81 RBI’s going into play on Tuesday. Ken Griffey Jr. anyone?
White Sox Pass One Big Test, Another To Follow
If the White Sox can take two out of three at Fenwey Park, or possibly all three, it would make them the hands down team to beat in the American League.
Sox Got Blum, How About Griffey?
The Sox have been rumored to be interested in using the waivers to get Ken Griffey Jr. Acquiring Griffey has a lot of question marks considering his passed health problems and enormous contract. It’s debatable what would be more amazing: the Sox winning it all, or Griffey staying healthy for an entire season.
Better Fit For White Sox: Burnett Or Schmidt?
With the trade deadline approaching the White Sox must decide which ace to pursue, San Francisco's Jason Schmidt or Florida's A.J. Burnett.
White Sox: Real Or Just Smoke And Mirrors!
Ozzie is going to have the last laugh on everyone who doubted his ability to bring a winner to Chicago. His Chicago White Sox's are the most surprised team of the season so far. With a 42-20 record and leading the American League Central all looks good in the Windy city for White Sox fans.
