Press Release - The Kansas City Royals today announced they have reached an agreement on a multi-year contract with pitcher Joakim Soria. The contract includes three guaranteed years through the 2011 season, then club options for each of the following three seasons (2012, 2013, and 2014). Consistent with club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Soria, who will turn 24 tomorrow, has gone 11-for-11 in save situations this year and gave up his first runs of the year last night after starting the season with 16.1 consecutive scoreless. He has limited opposing hitters to a collective .088 average (5-for-57), including a 2-for-25 mark by lefthanded hitters.

Soria was a Rule 5 selection of the Royals on December 7, 2006, from the San Diego Padres. He made 62 relief appearances for Kansas City last year, posting a 2.48 ERA, third best among all Major League rookies. He made good on 17 of 21 save opportunities last year giving him 28 big league rescues in 32 attempts. [READ]
