6th October, 2008 - 11:43 pm
Andrew Perna/RealGM - Rookie Jed Lowrie singled to right field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Jason Bay, to give the Red Sox a 3-2 win over the Angels on Monday night.

Boston will now face Tampa Bay in the ALCS, beginning later this week.

Jon Lester pitched seven strong innings for Boston, scattering four hits and allowing no runs. He struck out four batters and walked two on 109 pitches.

John Lackey was strong for Los Angeles as well, throwing seven innings of two-run ball.

The Sox got on the board in the fifth off Lackey, thanks to an RBI ground out by Jacoby Ellsbury and an RBI double by Dustin Pedroia.

Torii Hunter tied the game in the top of the eighth with a single off Justin Masterson that scored Mark Teixeira and Vladimir Guerrero.

The Angels threatened again in the top of the ninth, but couldn't come up with a run.

Kendry Morales doubled off Masterson, then Howie Kendrink sacrificed Reggie Willits, who pinch ran for Morales, over to third with one out.

Manny Delcarmen relieved Masterson and Erick Aybar, the hero in Game Three, attempted a suicide squeeze with Willits attempting to steal home.

Jason Varitek tagged Willits out at home, and Aybar grounded out to first two pitches later.

In the bottom of the ninth, Bay got things started with a ground-rule double to right. Mark Kotsay lined out to first for the second out of the inning, but Lowrie came through with the game-winning hit to push the Red Sox into the next round. [READ]
