Rays Sign Burrell
5th January, 2009 - 4:51 pm
RealGM Staff Report - The Tampa Bay Rays have signed veteran right-handed hitting outfielder Pat Burrell to a two-year deal.

Burrell had spent his entire professional career with the Philadelphia Phillies after being selected as the first overall pick in the 1998 amateur draft from the University of Miami.

The deal is believed to be worth $16 million over two years.

RealGM Note: Burrell was ranked 142nd in our FIC for 2008 and 'deserved' to make $6.5 million. He therefore had a Reina Value of -52%.

Signing a free market player to a contract that pays just $1.5 million annually more than he is probably worth would represent a savvy signing from Andrew Friedman and the Rays.
