The Best Players Of Spring Training '09, Version 1.0
12th March, 2009 - 5:28 pm
Christopher Reina/RealGM - In the obviously not worth much, but for what it’s worth category, we examined the statistics during the first few weeks Spring Training and gleaned out the top hitters based on our Field Impact Counter and the SWHIP for pitchers.

The FIC is a statistical metric I created in order to take various aspects of offensive play into account. Albert Pujols led the MLB in this category in 2008, while Alex Rodriguez was the leader in 2007.

- Matt Wieters just missed the below list and is currently 53rd, as he has a spring OPS of 1.117.

- Travis Snider of the Blue Jays is 133rd with an FIC of 10.5. He is hitting 1.175 in 26 at bats.

- Cody Random, Alex Rodriguez's apparent fill-in, is 299th with an FIC of 5.6 and OPS of .764.

- A few notable hitters that have been struggling:

Randy Winn, -9.2
Dan Uggla: -7.35
Joe Crede: -5.5
Felix Pie: -4.4
Jason Giambi: -2.7
Prince Fielder: -1.5

For pitchers, ranking by FIC during Spring Training is almost entirely an experiment in futility due to the weight of wins and losses, which make the results largely arbitrary. Instead, I sorted out all pitchers with at least five innings of work and ranked them according to their SWHIP.

SWHIP is a formula I created, which combines WHIP with strikeouts per inning and is one of the surest indicators of success for pitchers.
