Jays Try To Defer To Wells On Contract Status

The Star - Vernon Wells has one-year left, but the Jays, in cases of pending free-agency, have tried to lock up for the long-term truly desired home-grown stars before they reach a lame-duck season, but with Wells, they haven't been so adamant.

"I don't think there is a home-team discount in this day and age," Paul Godfrey said. "The player has to ask himself, `Is this the city I want to spend the next x-number of years in?' Sure we would like to keep Vernon. He is an integral part of the success of this year. But in any marriage it takes two people to say yes." [READ]
