Torre: Joba Won't Close
15th August, 2007 - 1:57 pm
New York Post - As dominant as Joba Chamberlain has been for the Yankees over three appearances, Joe Torre said he'd be hesitant to use him as a closer when Mariano Rivera needs a breather.

Neither Rivera nor Chamberlain pitched last night in a 12-0 loss to the Orioles.

In Chamberlain's Yankee Stadium debut a night earlier, he worked a perfect eighth inning, striking out two. Chamberlain has worked five scoreless innings since his promotion from Triple-A Scranton.

"[Monday] night I watched [Chamberlain] out there in the eighth inning and I was holding my breath getting him through it," Torre said. "It looked like he was pumped and I was just happy the result was there and happy to say, nice going, but you're out of the game.

"It's easy to say after what we've seen so far, yeah, no problem (closing). But we still have to keep in mind that he's 21 years old and [Monday] was his first exposure to Yankee Stadium. I'd rather go with experience." [READ]
