RGM Rundown For April 1: Seven 1-Run Games On Tuesday
2nd April, 2008 - 12:11 pm
Christopher Reina/RealGM - In the second full day of action, three bases loaded walks, a walk-off homer in Miami and a walk-off single at Chavez Ravine.

New York Mets 4, Florida Marlins 5

Pedro Martinez gave up homers to Dan Uggla and Luis Gonzalez and a RBI triple to Hanley Ramirez before injuring his hamstring in the fourth inning. Robert Andino hit a walk-off homerun in the 10th off Matt Wise to win it in the 10th.

With Pedro already on his way back to New York for an MRI, the Brian Bannister trade becomes more problematic though the Mets do have a deep rotation.

Toronto Blue Jays 2, New York Yankees 3

Rain washed away their first chance at the final opening day at this incarnation of Yankee Stadium, but they returned on Tuesday for a hard-fougt win over the Jays. Chien-Ming Wang threw seven innings, giving up two runs before handing it over to Joba Chamberlain for the 8th (struck out two) and Mariano Rivera for the 9th. Melky Cabrera hit a lead-off homer in the 6th (on the 10th pitch of the at bat) and made multiple outstanding catches in centerfield.

Colorado Rockies 2, St. Louis Cardinals 1

Kip Wells gave the Rockies 5.1 innings with his only mistake being a Yadier Molina solo homer. Kyle Lohase also pitched well, yielding just three hits over 5.0 innings, but the Rockies capitalized on a throwing error by Scott Rolen and Randy Flores walked Jayson Nix with the bases loaded to allow the winning-run.

Los Angeles Angels 9, Minnesota Twins 1

Jon Garland pitched 8.0 innings of six-hit 'we don't miss Orlando Cabrera' ball, giving up one run while throwing 67% strikes and 71% ground balls. Spring training sensation Darren O'Day worked a scoreless 9th, though he did give up two hits. Vladimir Guerrero went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs while Garret Anderson went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs.

Houston Astros 1, San Diego Padres 2

As the Padres did on Monday and they will need to do all season, they won on Tuesday behind excellent pitching. Chris Young loaded the bases in the fifth and Joe Thatcher came in and walked Michael Bourn on four consecutive pitches to give Houston their first run of the season. But the Padres' bullpen was perfect after that, not giving up a single hit in three innings of work. New leadoff hitter Brian Giles is still searching for his first hit of 2008.

Boston Red Sox 2, Oakland Athletics 1

The Sharks scored three goals on Tuesday; the A's and Giants combined to score three runs on Tuesday. Daisuke Matsuzaka was brilliant, striking out nine while giving up two hits (one a Jack Cust homer) and walking none over 6.2 innings. Kevin Youkilis scored both Red Sox runs on RBIs from Jacoby Ellsbury and Jason Varitek. In a losing cause Joe Blanton threw 99 pitches over 6.0 innings.

San Francisco Giants 2, Los Angeles Dodgers 3

Matt Cain gave the Giants 114 pitches of scoreless/4hree-hit ball but left Dodger Stadium without a decision. Like two of the other games on Tuesday, Joe Beimel walked in a run with the bases loaded to give the Giants a brief lead. With the game tied in the 9th, Delwyn Young's infield hit scored Rafael Furcal from second base in an ugly end to the game.

Texas Rangers 5, Seattle Mariners 4

Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homerun in the ninth off the typically untouchable J.J. Putz to give Texas their first win of the season. Felix Hernandez pitched seven innings, giving up one unearned run while striking out three. Vicente Padilla grinded out 110 pitches while scattering eight hits and one run for the Rangers.
