Varitek Considering Sitting Out Season

Jason Varitek has until Friday to accept Boston's most recent contract offer, and the catcher is rumored to be seriously considering sitting out the season instead of accepting the deal.

The Sox reportedly gave Varitek the choice of a one-year contract for a guaranteed $5 million or a one-year deal for $5 million with a vesting option.

Kotsay: Free Agency 'Not Pleasurable'

Veteran outfielder Mark Kotsay has played for five teams in his 11-year career and didn't find the free agency process to be pleasurable this winter.

"I've never left a team on my own," Kotsay told MLB.com.

Kotsay has been traded four times, but he was eligible for free agency for the first time this offseason. He re-signed with the Red Sox for $1.5 million even though he's not guaranteed a job.

"There were never any [other offers] made. Not legitimate offers, anyway," Kotsay said. "From the standpoint of being a free agent the first time, it was not a pleasurable experience by any means."
