Mariners Will Stick With Struggling Griffey

Ken Griffey Jr. is struggling to begin the season, but the Boston Globe writes that the Mariners will stick with him as their left-handed designated hitter.

"I feel a lot better this year than last year," Griffey told reporters recently. "I'm able to do things now that I wasn't able to do last year. So it's just a matter of getting in a groove and doing what you're supposed to do."

Seattle wouldn't ever release him, but they could reduce his role if his struggles mount.

He is hitting just .217 with an OPS of .519.

After Rehab Start, Lee Ready To Debut

Cliff Lee will finally make his pitching debut for the Mariners on Friday when they host the Rangers.

The left-hander threw six shutout innings during a rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday.

He is working his way back to the mound after straining his abdomen during spring training.

"I felt strong the whole time," Lee said. "It's really more of a precautionary-type deal to ease back into it but physically, I feel like I could keep going, for sure.

"Still, it's better safe than sorry."

Lee's Five-Game Suspension Dropped

Major League Baseball has dropped its five-game suspension of Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee.

Seattle said Tuesday that MLB vice president of administration John McHale made the decision after Lee's appeal hearing last week.

"We are pleased that Major League Baseball has come to this determination," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "We look forward to Cliff completing his injury rehabilitation and returning to the mound to compete."
